UAAHC electives are designed to help our
scholars identify their artistic attributes and internalize the guiding
principles of our academy. Embracing the ancient adages, "Who Feels
It Knows It" and "Know Thyself", our art electives help to
cultivate the affective (emotional) and cognitive intelligences within our
scholars. Additionally, through artistic expression our young men develop
a strong and healthy self-concept and notion of manhood, which helps them
approach life with confidence and determination. The following describes
our four art electives:
Music Industry:
This highly stimulating and engaging elective
helps our scholars identify their creative voices. Our young men participate in
exercises that help to increase their improvisational aptitude, wit and courage.
The class simulates a record label and our scholars assume the role of owners,
artists, graphic designers, producers, managers and engineers. Integrating our
history theme, scholars develop knowledge and appreciation of the evolution of
music and music technology. Additionally, the class takes trips to radio
stations and record labels for the purpose of gaining "Real World"
experience of this industry.
Jewelry Making:
Metal and stone technology has been used for
centuries. The jewelry making course provides a historical context for the use
of these precious resources. Our scholars learn the techniques for creating
bracelets, rings, necklaces and decorations using metal. Additionally, our young
men are exposed to the entrepreneurial aspect of the jewelry business. Advanced
scholars have the opportunity to market their creations at festivals and
cultural events.
Drama:
As our scholars navigate the world of
adolescence, they greatly benefit from establishing sound values to help inform
their decisions. This scholar centered elective simulates the real day to day
experiences of young people and through acting techniques, our young men explore
solutions to contemporary youth challenges. Through the memorization and
presentation of monologues of historic figures, scholars increase their
self-awareness, develop their oratory skills and create strategies to overcome
life challenges.
Poetry/Spoken
Word:
Words are powerful mediums
to shaping reality. In this elective our scholars are exposed to the written and
spoken word expression of poets from antiquity to the present. Our young men
learn how to explore their creativity through a variety of written and vocal
exercises. Furthermore, our scholars learn a variety of poetic forms. Our young
men develop their voices and become comfortable with speaking in front of
audiences.
