Youth Workshops


Won’t Catch Me ‘Ridin’ Dirty!!:

100 Black Men in Law Enforcement Who Care  

Workshop 1  10:45am-12:30pm

What are your thoughts about police officers and law enforcers?  What has been your interaction with the police? What must you know in order to successfully navigate through encounters with police officers?   
 

One Hundred Black Men in Law Enforcement Who Care will facilitate a highly interactive and thought provoking workshop that provides strategies and solutions to interacting with officers of the law.  Come be empowered with knowledge of the law and how to reduce your chances of being in conflict with the police.

Swagger:  A person’s style – the way they walk, talk and dress. 

You think you have “Swag.”  Do heads turn in your direction when you walk into a room?  What does your style communicate to society?  Does your swagger get you the outcomes that you want in life?  
 

If you see yourself as a brother who desires to have power and influence, come learn how to look the part.  This workshop will teach participants the secrets to enhancing their style and how to look the part in order to be the part.   
 

Participants will also learn the art of knotting a tie.

Are you pulled by the enticement of the streets?  The money? Prestige? Respect? Are you fully prepared for the consequences of playing on the concrete?   
 

This interactive workshop panel will explore the mentality of the streets.  Personal testimonials from “Street Doctors” will provide insight into the world of violence, drugs, money and death.   
 

Participants will be given strategies to help usher them into healthier behaviors that promote life.   


Treat Her Like a Lady:

“When you cultivate a young lady, you inspire a nation.”   
 

It’s time to revive chivalry and place our young women back on their rightful pedestals.  Where the women go, our culture goes, for our women are the mothers of civilization.  How are we treating our sisters?  Based off of the current treatment of our sisters, what does our future look like?   
 

Come participate in a very interactive workshop that will help to empower our young men to serve as strong counterparts to our young women.

Come learn the secrets to cultivating healthy bonds with young classy women who have high expectations for themselves and expect greatness from young men.

Come share your perspective on adolescent male and female relationships with conscientious young women who are committed to developing strong and responsible associations with young men.   


Black and Brown Manhood in the Era of Obama:

Through the campaign of Barack Obama, the world examined another expression of Black masculinity that defied the common image that is displayed through the media.    What is your definition of manhood?  In the midst of a male crisis, where are you learning to be a man?  What are you doing to ensure that you will be victorious over the conspiracy to destroy you?   
 

This workshop will focus on the journey to manhood and the successes and challenges that boys of African and Latino ancestry encounter on their passage to adulthood. 


Scholar Athlete Panel:

Do you think that you have the athletic skills to play in college?  Are you currently academically fit to make your college athletic dreams a reality?  This panel discussion explores the life of a scholar athlete from young men who earned the privilege of participating in sports at the university level.  Particular emphasis will be centered on building the habits of a successful college bound scholar athlete.   
 


Music Industry Panel:

Do you have aspirations of becoming an artist, producer or music industry executive? This engaging panel discussion will focus on the skills, values and the mind-set that is essential for being successful in the music industry.  Participants will have the opportunity to hear from veterans who have contributed to the success of well known artists and have established successful careers in the industry.   


Warrior Bootcamp:

Calling all warriors interested in building your endurance and strength!!  This interactive and highly engaging workshop will provide participants with healthy routines and practices for maintaining good mental and physical health.  Participants will learn proper callisthenic techniques for individual and partner training, as well as, preventative measures for injuries. 
 


Show Me the Money:

This interactive workshop is designed to help teens understand the value of budgeting finances through awareness of their values, spending choices and habits.  Through playing the “Game of Life,” participants will gain a realistic understanding of the daily financial choices that are apart of an adults life.  Participants will learn about the role of credit cards, how career choices affect financial security and some principles of saving and spending.   

 


Falsification of Our Story: Building and Reclaiming Our Legacy:

The workshop will address the blatant and subtle ways Afrikans and people of Afrikan descent have been erased from the history pages throughout the world. Understanding our story and what we have contributed to the world is the beginning step in reclaiming our legacy and using it to shape and influence our future. 

 


Soul Growth:


What is the Soul and how does it Grow?  Participants will explore answers to these questions and more with the objective of learning how to channel their energy of "Soul Power."  Students will be taught the essence of Taiji, a form of active meditation and self-defense developed to enhance health, strength, power, harmony, and balance in life.

What Happened to My Baby Boy?:

Have you experienced waking up, looking at your son and asking, “Whose child is this?   

This workshop will focus on the joys and pains of raising adolescent boys.  Particular focus will be centered on strategies for helping young men navigate through this peculiar phase of development and overcome the negative influences that destroy them before they reach adulthood.   
 


Budgeting in the Time of Economic Hardship:

There is no doubt about it, a recession is a difficult time for everyone, and it can be tough to find ways to scrape buy. However, there are many ways that individuals can cut back during a recession to make ends meet. By cutting back on a few non-essential expenses, or renegotiating the terms of some of your bills, you can save yourself hundreds if not thousands of dollars during this financially troubling time.  This interactive workshop will provide participants with the essential tools of managing money during economic challenges.

This workshop will be a round table discussion about the joys and challenges of being a husband or father.  We love our sister, but this workshop is for brothers only.  Men need time to mentally build together and share strategies on how to be the best men they can be for their families.

This hands-on workshop will provide parents and families with answers to determine benefits and programs they might be eligible to receive in New York.  Parents and families will be able to Access over 35 programs such as:  Child Care, Employment and Training, Financial Assistance, Food and Nutrition, Health-Care, Health Insurance, and Housing.

Future Leaders Program:

This workshop will be an informative session that examines the:

  • prison industrial complex
  • conditions inmates encounter in prison
  • consequences of illegal gun
  • effects of crime on individuals and their community
  • consequences of illegal gun use
  • consequences of dropping out of school
  • impact that negative rap music has on individuals
 
 

    Additionally, Mr. Steele will share his prison experience with parents of at-risk youth who are not fully aware of the consequences of their negative decisions that land them in prison.

Using Sankofa as a Tool to Develop Young Males: Lessons from the Great Debaters:

This session will utilize clips from the film The Great Debaters to facilitate a dialogue about the best practices of culturally competent educators. Participants will be exposed to the Leadership and Literacy through Debate Campaign and curriculum that is currently utilizing an African Centered approach to empower students, educators and parents. Workshop will include literature and current research from Carter G. Woodson, Gloria-Ladson-Billings and others surrounding practical strategies for inspiring urban males to become engaged, critical thinkers who go on to become life long learners
